Cate Young is a podcast producer and film and culture critic from Trinidad and Tobago. She is the creator of BattyMamzelle; a now-defunct feminist pop culture blog focused on film, television, music and critical commentary on media representation. She is currently the co-creator of Thirty, Flirty + Film, a sometimes biweekly film review newsletter, with Zosha Millman.
Her writing has dealt particularly with the intersection of race, gender and sexuality. Predominantly, her critical focus is on media representation through cultural storytelling in film and television — engaging with the entertainment industry as a function of its political power to shape and mould society.
Many of her most popular essays introduce an intersectional political analysis to discussions of pop culture.
“Pop culture does not exist in a vacuum. It is a feedback loop that both contributes to and is sustained by the way we see ourselves as a culture — and in relation to each other.”
